A faltering Bristol City welcome an equally underperforming Sheffield
Wednesday side to Ashton Gate. Having lost the final play-off place last
weekend following a defeat away to Cardiff, Bristol will want to
re-enter the play-off places.
Teams below Bristol have been vying for their position; it finally
slipped away in midweek as Sheffield United moved up to sixth with a 3-1
away win at Reading. With just one win from their last ten Championship
games (W1, D4, L5), Bristol need a major turnaround.
Jos Luhukay saw his Wednesday side knocked out of the FA Cup in midweek
at the hands of the former Owls boss, Swansea’s Carlos Carvalhal. With
no competition to realistically challenge for, it now seems a case of
damage limitation as the pre-season play-off favourites look to next
The Owls have won just one of their last nine Championship games away
from home (W1, D5, L3). They have won just three of 17 on the road this
term and have drawn more games than any other Championship side (13).
Bristol City have scored a third of their goals this season from set
pieces (16/48), this represents the joint highest number of set-piece
goals in the league, along with Wolves. Wednesday have conceded a
quarter of their goals from set plays (11/44).
Players to watch: Bobby Reid (BRC) has scored the goal to gain his team
a draw in two of their last three games. He is their top scorer with 14
goals this season from midfield – his highest tally to-date.
Adam Reach (SHW) has provided more assists for Wednesday than any other
player this term, including one to Lucas Joao to put his team ahead
against eventual winners Villa last time out.
Stat attack: Each team has one win from their last ten Championship
games, the away side have not won this game since 2012/’13 – in six
Both teams have scored in five of the last seven meetings, four of those
games saw over 3.5 goals scored in total (all competitions).
Bristol City will be aiming to make amends for a 1-0 loss to Cardiff
City when they host Sheffield Wednesday at their Ashton Gate Stadium on
Matchday 35. The Robins extended their winless run in the Championship
to five games, but they remained in the play-offs berth in the
Championship standings. Bristol City want to get back on course as soon
as possible and they are definitely capable of beating the Owls, who are
not enjoying a season to remember. Sheffield Wednesday head into
Saturdays football match following back-to-back losses to the likes of
Millwall and Aston Villa and seeing that they face Swansea City in the
FA Cup in midweek, tired legs could prove to be a big problem for the
visitors. You should bear in mind that Bristol City are after their
ninth home win of the season, with the team defeating the likes of QPR,
Reading, Not. Forest, Boro, Cardiff City, Bolton, Derby and Barnsley at
their Ashton Gate Stadium.
