Liverpool welcome ‘an old friend’ to Anfield as Rafa Benitez and
Newcastle travel to Merseyside in the 29th round of the Premier League
Rafa Benitez has faced Liverpool five times as a manager (Valencia,
Chelsea, Newcastle) and has so far refused to lose! Can the Reds
overcome their old manager at the sixth attempt?
The home side have reason to be confident as they are unbeaten on home
turf this season, and have recently started to turn draws into wins (W4,
D1 from the last five). Moreover, since the turn of the century, the
teams have met 17 times at Anfield (in all competitions), with Liverpool
unbeaten (W13, D4).
Liverpool celebrated passing 100 goals in competitive matches this
season in the last round, but coach Jurgen Klopp is not done yet: “A
nice number… but we cannot stop!”
Currently just two points ahead of the relegation spots, Newcastle will
be desperate for points, but considering their history at Anfield, fans
will have tempered expectations.
Players to watch: Liverpool’s Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah has been
nothing short of a revelation this season, with 23 goals and eight
assists in 27 PL matches! He’s now scored in six matches in a row…
With some injury doubts surrounding top scorer Dwight Gayle, Newcastle
might rely on Joselu to supply the goals. He’s has four PL goals this
season, and also scored in the reverse fixture.
Stat attack: Goals, goals, goals. Liverpool have scored seven goals on
two, five goals on three and four goals on six occasions this season (in
In the last ten head to head games at Anfield, Newcastle have not kept a
clean sheet – shipping 23 goals and scoring just five.
The last five head to head matches have seen 19 yellow cards (3.8 on
average) and one red awarded. Four of those five have ended under 2.5
High-flying Liverpool play host to Newcastle United at their Anfield on
Matchday 29. The Reds rolled over West Ham United (4-1) in their last
league fixture, with Mohamed Salah once again proving his worth. The
pacey winger, who is enjoying a season to remember, is likely to prove a
handful for the opposition defenders and we predict that he is going to
help Jurgen Klopps troops extend their winning run in the Premier League
to three games. The Magpies, on the other hand, are fighting hard to
secure yet another elite division survival, but they should not be
looking for points at Anfield. Rafa Benitezs troops are on a three-match
winless run on the road in the English top flight and they are unlikely
to upset the star-studded Reds in Saturdays football match. The two
teams played out a 1-1 draw at St. James Park in January, but it is well
known that the Reds are a real force to be reckoned with at home.
